Diving in Dauin and Dumaguete
Dumaguete charms visitors with its small-town atmosphere and hospitable locals, providing a perfect backdrop for exploring both muck diving and the Filipino culture.
In terms of diving in general, the region is already renowned for its diverse marine life, from captivating critters like flamboyant cuttlefish, frogfish and nudibranch to larger species such as barracuda, turtles, and sea snakes, making every dive a memorable experience.
Diving around Dauin and Dumaguete is a year-round activity, although the period from October to June (outside of the typhoon season) is generally preferred due to more favorable conditions. While typhoons are rare in this region of the Philippines, occasional rough seas can occur.
October stands out for many divers as an excellent time for diving, coinciding with the octopus mating season. Water temperatures typically range from 28 to 29°C, dropping slightly to around 26°C in March.
Many divers find a full 3 mm wetsuit sufficient for warmth, though some just opt for dive skins and rash guards. Sturdy neoprene booties are definitely recommended for shore dives, which are common in the area, as this often involves walking over sand and occasionally stones.
